What are the best finance competitions ?

If you want a job in financial services – particularly in front office investment banking, you’ll need to tick all the predictable boxes (track record of stellar academic performance, relevant work experience, interesting extracurricular activities). But in an environment where tens or even hundreds of applicants are chasing the same job, even this may not be enough. Fortunately, you can supplement your application still further by entering finance-related competitions. To the best of our knowledge, we’ve listed some of the best finance-related competitions and games below.

1- The Finance club’s trading game

The Trading Game gathered +2000 players coming from 15 Swiss universities in 2019. The contest is a 5 weeks virtual trading competition to beat all records, exclusive conferences, a workshop and a big closing event on the UNIL-EPFL campus for the awards ceremony.

  • Who: Everyone can play but only students are rewarded.

2- The European Finance Cup

The aim of this competition is to convey to the 2’400+ participating students the issues of the financial world and provide them with a comprehensive insight of what they could actually do both in the Corporate Finance and Financial Markets. This competition has two main contests: The first one is an online trading Contest and the second one is a M&A case study in which all participants will attend a situation scenario of a company wishing to acquire another one to improve its profitability.

3- Global case competition at Harvard

The Global Case Competition at Harvard is the world’s most prestigious student-organized case competition. This year’s competition is organized by the Harvard College European Business Group (EBG), and the International Finance Student Association (IFSA).
​The competition is a unique opportunity connecting the world’s smartest academics from the United States, Europe, Asia, Latin America and Africa. Participation in the event is also a great opportunity to interact with the invited companies, financial institutions, guests and partners.

  • Who: Participants must be currently enrolled in a recognized University Program.

4- National Investment Banking Competition

The National Investment Banking Competition (NIBC) brings together 1,600 students, from over 100 universities, competing to be recognized as the best team in the case competition. It is open to both undergraduate and graduate students who want to utilize and develop skills in financial modeling and pitching based on a real-world simulation of an investment banking transaction.

  • Prizes: A $15,000 prize pool will be awarded for the winners.
  • Who: Self-registration is open to all students, from any university.

5- CFI’s Global Financial Modelling Competition

By using a business case competition approach, contestants will experience a “real-world” simulation where they work at a private equity firm and have to build a financial model to decide whether or not they would invest in a private company that’s being offered for sale.

  • Prizes: $10’000 worth of cash prizes.

6- TTCs’ stock market competition

Participants can either chose to play in the individual contest or the team (made up of between 5 and 10 players) one. In any case, they are given a virtual capital of CHF 10’000 that can be invested in various asset classes. This is the ideal contest to improve your trading skills and get used to the online platform SwissQuote.
